Tire Change and Fall Maintenance

The autumn season is upon us, and it also means tire change and car maintenance. Winter can be harsh, even for your vehicle, so be prepared!

Tire Change

Changing winter tires is mandatory in Quebec. In fact, it is stated as follows:

"Your vehicle must be winter-ready from December 1 to March 15. However, because spring conditions can be variable, it is recommended that you wait until a few weeks after the end of this period to install your all-season or summer tires.”

This requirement applies to all motorized vehicles registered in Quebec, including rental vehicles.

While you're at your Chevrolet dealership, don't forget to have your tires checked for wear and tear, and make sure that you've done your tire alignment for the cold season.

Fall Maintenance

As we all know, winter represents a challenge not only for motorists, but also for their vehicles. In fact, many of your vehicle's components can suffer serious damage as a result of the cold.

While the technician is taking care of your tires, why not ask him or her to review a number of items on your vehicle before winter? These include:

  • The battery - In periods of extreme cold, batteries discharge more quickly. A healthy battery is essential for easy starting. Make sure it's in good condition.

  • Oil change - Take advantage of your visit to change your engine oil to avoid worries during cold weather. What's more, using a block heater can keep the oil at optimum temperature, improving its viscosity and engine lubrication.

  • Fluid check - Have all your fluids (antifreeze, transmission, windshield washer) checked for safe driving.

  • Fuel lines - If you leave your fuel tank almost empty, ice crystals could form and clog the fuel lines. So be sure to fill up before the cold arrives. Don't leave your tank almost empty in winter, instead fill it up to at least half-full.

  • Tire pressure - Temperature has a direct impact on tire pressure. Check tire pressure regularly (many cars are equipped with tire pressure monitors) to ensure safe driving.

  • The heating system - Make sure the antifreeze fluid is at the right level and use the correct fluid to avoid problems throughout the season. Christin Automobile's service technician will be happy to check this for you.

  • Checking belts - Some rubber belts are sensitive to cold. Don't take any chances and have your entire vehicle inspected before the winter season.

  • Keep an eye on the range - This recommendation applies more to electric vehicles, which are more sensitive to cold temperatures than their gasoline-powered counterparts. In winter, fuel or electricity consumption can increase considerably. Plan your journeys carefully and allow for recharging if necessary.

Finally, washing your Buick SUV or any other vehicle in cold weather is not an option, but if you have a garage, be sure to clean it at least once a month. It's also essential to apply a quality rustproofing treatment before winter, as not only salt, but also the gravel and calcium used to maintain roads and paths can damage your vehicle. If your vehicle is older, this is an even better option.

Winter is a wonderful season, but it can also be a harsh one. The best way to ensure a worry-free winter is to have your GMC truck or car inspected by the specialists at Christin Automobile. That way, you can face the winter season with confidence!

An Emergency Kit in Your Vehicle

Among the accessories to have on board your vehicle in winter, we'd like to mention the ones we feel are most important:

  • Shovel in the trunk
  • Snow broom within easy reach
  • Warm blanket
  • First-aid kit
  • Dried treats
  • Flashlight
  • Road safety triangles
  • Portable booster
  • Etc.

In short, with these few useful tips, you'll have a safe winter, and your vehicle will be in good condition. Defensive driving is also a must during the cold season.
