Everything Great About the New 2.7 L Turbo Engine Available for the Sierra and Silverado
December 28 2022, Christin Automobile
Having recently reappeared on the market, the 2.7 L Turbo 4-cylinder engine available in new GMC and Chevrolet vehicles offers quite a few benefits when compared to its predecessor.
Come and learn more about this new engine, compare it to the older model and see what this version could bring to your driving experience.
Introduced with the Silverado and the Sierra
The 2.7 L Turbo engine first appeared inside the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and the GMC Sierra 1500, back in 2019. Since then, it has spread its reach to the Chevrolet Colorado and the GMC Canyon.
From the very start, this engine was developed to be installed inside Chevrolet pickup trucks. This is one of the many reasons why it’s now standard in a wide range of the American manufacturer’s models.
Since its first appearance in 2019, this engine has been reimagined and upgraded to better fit GMC’s vision. This means that the version available in this year and next year’s trucks is the best it has ever been.
Under the Hood of the Silverado 2023
Being the standard engine in the brand-new 2023 Chevrolet Silverado, just like in some versions of the 2022 Silverado before it, Chevrolet’s 2.7 L Turbo is here to stay.
Able to generate 310 hp at 5,600 rpm, with a torque of 430 lb-ft at 1,500 rpm, this engine provides you with impressive power, without any compromise on its durability. It can accelerate from 0 to 96 km/h in just under 7 seconds.
This new version of the engine is an upgrade over the one introduced a few years back. The differences between the two engines are numerous, but here’s the main points:
- In the 2019 Silverado 1500, the engine produced 310 hp and a torque of 348 lb-ft
- Now, in the 2023 Silverado, the new engine produces 310 hp and a torque of 430 lb-ft
We can easily see that the torque has been upgraded significantly in the last few years.
Indeed, there’s been a torque upgrade of just about 20%, which allows for better acceleration. Additionally, this improvement also helps it carry heavy loads with less difficulty, and might interest quite a few people looking for a new truck.
Two Versions of the 2022 Silverado
Even though the new version of the 2.7 L Turbo engine available in the 2023 Silverado is also available in most 2022 models, like the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500, it’s worth knowing that the engine is different between the LTD versions of these two vehicles and the other existing versions.
- For the 2022 Silverado LTD and the 2022 Sierra 1500 LTD, we’re looking at the same engine found in the previous models. This one produces 310 hp and a torque of 348 lb-ft
- In all other versions of the 2022 Silverado and 2022 Sierra, the engine is the new 2023 version now available, also able to produce 310 hp, but with a torque of 430 lb-ft
Those of you that are interested in the new version of the engine should bear this in mind to the choice or not of this optimization while shopping for a 2022 model.
Should you Choose the 2.7 L Turbo Engine?
Standard in the 2023 GMC Sierra Pro, SLE and GMC Elevation, the new 2.7 L Turbo is here to stay. It’s also available as the base engine for the 2023 Silverado, the 2023 Colorado and the 2023 GMC Canyon.
Designed with Chevrolet light-duty pickup trucks in mind, this engine offers a compromise between fuel economy and the power we expect from a truck’s engine.
Equipped with the new technologies developed for this specific engine, the 2.7 L Turbo can offer a fuel economy of 10.8 L per 100 km on the highway and 12.5 L per 100 km in the city.
Additionally, it’s GM’s first 4-cylinder engine to offer the manufacturer’s Active Fuel Management system. This means that the engine can close two of its four cylinders to provide an even greater fuel economy while the engine isn’t running under heavy stress.
It seems that this engine is the manufacturer’s new standard for those who want to experience the Chevrolet truck while also saving on fuel.
