2024 Chevrolet Trax vs Honda HR-V vs Hyundai Kona Comparison
November 30 2023, Christin Automobile
With the booming of the sub-compact SUV category, it’s not always easy to make the right choice. The arrival of the all-new generation 2024 Chevrolet Trax forces us to make a comparison. To ensure you are making the right choice, read on.
The Chevrolet Trax and Its Two Competitors
The year 2024 marks a turning point for the Chevrolet Trax. First of all, it stands out from its predecessors and exudes more sportiness. It is longer and wider than the Trax 1.0.
Unlike the Honda HR-V, with its somewhat cushy appearance, and the Hyundai Kona, with its offset silhouette, the Chevrolet Trax SUV projects itself into the future with its distinctly more aggressive front end, inspired in fact by the Blazer. The large, tomahawk-shaped taillights are another striking feature.
While the Honda HR-V was undergoing a new look in 2023, the Hyundai Kona is presented with a new generation, but keeps the same character, which does very little to change the rather banal design.
In short, the all-new 2024 Chevrolet Trax brings a breath of fresh air with its 17 to 19-inch wheels, standard LED headlights, a new choice of bright colors and a sunroof in several versions.
Prices and Versions
The price of a new car is always an issue for those about to make a choice. Some automakers have understood that most buyers have limits to their wallets.
To get a better picture of the prices and versions of the SUVs compared, let’s take a closer look at the table below:
Compared vehicles |
Chevrolet Trax, starting price |
Honda HR-V, starting price |
Hyundai Kona, starting price |
Versions |
Trax LS: $23,799 Trax 1RS: $25,299 Trax LT: $28,199 Trax 2RS: $30,299 Trax Activ: $30,299 |
LX-B 2WD: $31,082 LX-B AWD: $33,382 Sport-B: $36,282 EX-L NAVI: $40,032 |
Essential: $28,646 Preferred: $31,146 N Line AWD: $38,146 |
Price range |
$23,799 – $30,299 |
$31,082 - $40,032 |
$28,646 - $38,146 |
Considering the above, it is clear that the Chevrolet SUV is considerably less expensive than the other two vehicles compared. Moreover, it offers a wider choice of versions at a lower price. Finally, you’ll be able to choose a top-of-the-range version of the 2024 Chevrolet Trax without emptying your pockets, which would cost you considerably more for the 2024 HR-V and Kona.
Engines
All three SUVs boast efficient powertrains:
- Chevrolet Trax: 3-cylinder 1.2 L turbo engine (137 hp and 162 lb-ft)
- Honda HR-V: 2.0 L 4-cylinder naturally-aspirated engine (158 hp and 138 lb-ft)
- Hyundai Kona: 2.0 L, 4-cylinder naturally-aspirated engine (147 hp and 132 lb-ft)
At first glance, both rivals are more powerful than the Chevrolet Trax. However, the HR-V and Kona have less torque than the Trax (+24 and +30). Furthermore, the Trax can now count on a six-speed automatic gearbox, while the other two have a much lazier CVT. Benoît Charette, in L’Annuel de l’automobile 2024, says of the automatic gearbox:
“Instead, GM has installed a six-speed automatic unit that distills the power of this little mill much better...”
Fuel Consumption
The following table gives a good indication of the SUVs’ frugality:
Chevrolet Trax |
Honda HR-V |
Hyundai Kona |
|
Combined fuel consumption |
7.9 L/100 km |
8.7 L/100 km |
8.1 L/100 km |
There is no doubt that the 2024 Trax SUV will cost you less at the pump than the other two rivals. Even in the city, the Trax consumes less fuel than the HR-V and Kona.
Moreover, the Chevrolet Trax reviews indicate that it’s a nimble, inexpensive SUV at the gas station.
In a Nutshell
In the light of the previous data and comments, the Chevrolet Trax, like other Chevrolet cars, is a new-generation subcompact SUV that stands out in terms of its design, which is far more enticing than its rivals, and in terms of its price, performance and fuel consumption.
Although we didn’t compare vehicle sizes, the 2024 Trax model is longer and wider than the pre-2024 Trax. It’s longer than the HR-V and has the largest wheelbase of all (2,692 mm).
